Presently, Yak or “The Giant King” is the greatest animation movie of this year that has changed everything in Thailand. It modified Thai people’s and foreigners’ viewpoint about the ability of Thai people to make and adapt animation. For a long time, many animations of movie-length were created. For example, The PIXAR and The Disney studios have made many animated movies which earned them high revenues. For example: Toy Story, Finding Nemo, Ratatouille, etc. Thus, the possibility of high revenues has influenced the Thai people to create animation movies which out depending on foreign studios. Now, we have a great new animation movie by Thai people, The Giant King, to present to all the people in the world.
The inspiration of this movie is from the “Ramayana” story. The father or creater of The Giant King, Prapas Cholsaranon, stated that the Ramayana was for all humanity for all time. The Giant King starts at the end of the biggest war between Lord Ra- ma and Tosakan. After one million days, Puak and Na Keaw were discovered chained together by some people. Both have adventures together and learn the truth about themselves. They will continue as friends or become enemies again. Is their friendship stronger than an unbreakable chain? This movie has many characters. To demonstrate, ‘Puak’ or Hanu- man who is a spunky robot, ‘Na Keaw’ or Tosakan who has a loveable nature and a gentle heart, 'Kum’ who is the leader of a vaudeville show, ‘Sadayu’ who is a sarcastic auntie, and ‘Sanimnoi’, a little can robot, etc.
The Giant King has many producers___the father of the movie ‘Prapas Cholsaranon’, ‘Ex Chaiporn’ who is co-director, executive producer ‘Oh-Panit’, P’Soop who is co-producer,‘Sia Jiang’ is the financier, and 28 staffs. It had 2 main working groups. The first group worked on art. They built many models of Na Kheaw, Peurg, Kum, etc. But there was no one model per character! They had many models and actor for each character. After that, the directors would get these models to pose for CGI animation. The last step, they would bring the texture and animations to merge in order to get the desired visual effect. The second group did had programming responsibility___rigging, simulation, shading, rendering, system administration, and programming. There were the step to make The Giant King. It required 6 years to create and one hundred million Baht for create this fantastic animation movie.
This animation effect 4 thing in Thailand. First of all, animation innovation in Thailand is now very advanced. To illustrate, animation technology in Thailand was less quality than PIXAR but it was of excellent quality and this movie was created from the imagination of Thai people only. Secondly, people who watch this movie, especially foreign people have felt amazed and surprised. Thirdly, for the animation movies industry of Thailand, The industry has grown and created new animated movies. Finally, the economy of the animation industry will continue to develop and more animations will be created to demonstrate in the future Thailand capabilities.
How did “The Giant King” change everything? It’s unique Thailand talent, low cost when compared with other people,and of great quality. “The Giant King” shows the ability of animation creators of Thailand and now we say “Nothing Thailand can’t do!”
